“As the day begins, I pause and remind myself that what I have today can be taken away tomorrow.”

This quote came from Alex Blackwell, creator of thebridgemaker.com, a beautiful and thought-provoking website that provides peace, motivation, and inspiration through articles, blog posts, and videos (http://www.thebridgemaker.com/). I stumbled across his site accidentally (and thankfully!) a few months ago when searching for something to lift my spirits. I found just what I was looking for in a post he wrote titled “Isn’t Life Beautiful?”

Sometimes, I remember thinking in my grumpy, down-in-the-dumps mood that quickly changed after reading this post.

“Our lives can be anything we choose to make them,” his article said. “We can struggle with the complexity or we can delight in the simplicity.”

This quote does not suggest that bad things don’t happen in our lives. They do. It isn’t saying that the way to overcome life’s difficult and unexpected moments is to put on a pair of rose-colored glasses. He’s just suggesting that our attitudes and outlooks and ways of dealing with situations can be altered if we make sure our minds are in the right place.

I’ve never tried meditating, and I’m not sure that Alex does, but in his article, he talks about letting his mind drift to a deeper place after checking off his daily to-do’s, the stress-inducing ones similar to those we all have.

“(My mind) goes to a place absent of urgency – it goes to a beautiful place.”

A place absent of urgency. I can’t even begin to imagine that. I have two small children, a part-time job, and a book to promote (onceuponawishbook.com). Before I even attempt to get to that special place, I’m going to focus on and master the parts of Alex’s article that have stuck with me the most:

“We can be overwhelmed by the ugliness (in life) or we can celebrate the beauty. I choose to look for the beauty.”

“This is my life complete with setbacks and disappointments, but it’s also full of love and beauty.”

And the most influential one (I’m fully aware that I am using the same quote twice. It’s just so powerful that I wanted you to hear it again: “As the day begins, I pause and remind myself that what I have today can be taken away tomorrow.”

Wow. When I take a second to think of everything I have, the thought of any part of it going away brings physical pain to my chest. I have the two most special, brilliant, incredible little boys in the world. The most loving husband. We are all healthy. I have both my parents and my brother and his amazing family. I have aunts and uncles and grandparents and extended family galore. I have friends I call family and a career that allows me write from the comfort of my own home.

I have thoughts, just like everybody else, that can take me down a road of anxiety and worry and unhappiness, but just as Alex suggests, I make a huge effort to never let those thoughts take over. Are they going to uncontrollably enter my mind sometimes? Of course. Do I have to deal with things that I’d rather not deal with? Absolutely.

But after reading Alex’s article, I am truly inspired to make daily changes and conscious efforts to turn my life into what I want it to be by continually asking myself, “Isn’t Life Beautiful?”

Yes, it really is.
